A remarkable Surgery; Rejoin the humerus after destroying cancer cells

One and half years old toddler, a baby girl whose cancer infected humerus has successfully replaced after removing to destroy the cancer cells using a high dose of radiotherapy by specialists at Karapitiya Hospital.

The remarkable surgery had last about eight and a half hours. Consultant to Pediatric Surgeon Dr Janath Liyanage at Karapity and Consultant to Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Kaushal Karunarathne at Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital had carried out the surgery.

When the bone removed consultant surgeons instructed to deliver the bone to the cancer unit at Karapitiya as recommending stable safety conditions. The bone has been last about 20 minutes with a high dose of radiotherapy under directions of Consultant Dr Jayamini Horandugoda, Oncologist.  After removing the bone, since the surgery occurs, it has been last about 40 minutes as removing bone from hand.

The baby girl had cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma in her humerus. After diagnosing the condition by the doctors she has undergone chemotherapy treatments for several months. When the treatments had not been effective results, the Consultants decided to undergo surgery without amputating her hand. If someone has that kind of cancer condition, doctors normally refer amputation according to Dr Janath Liyanage.

Fortunately, after combating with remarkable surgery where has been the first time in Sri Lanka, the baby is recovering at ICU under treatments.
